On June 15, 2025, Romanian airline DAN AIR inaugurated direct flights between Bucharest and Damascus, becoming the first and only EU-based carrier to resume regular commercial services to the Syrian capital after a long period of absence. This is a major achievement for Romanian aviation, set against a geopolitical backdrop marked by tensions in the Middle East and strict aviation safety restrictions.

Flight DNA541 was operated with an Airbus A320by an all-female flight crew - Captain Cristina Preda and First Officer Andreea Penca- a premiere that underscores not only progress in diversity but also the professionalism Romanian pilots bring to complex missions.

The Romania–Syria air connection, suspended by Romanian operators for nearly two decades, is now being reestablished with a service that also carries a strong diplomatic dimension. The launch was attended by Romanian and Syrian officials both at Bucharest “Henri Coandă” International Airport (Otopeni) and at Damascus International Airport, with ACAR represented by President Marius Popescu and Vice President Cătălin Ilie.

Why does this flight matter?

  • It represents a strategic revival of connectivity between Europe and the Middle East, with Romania positioned as a regional transit point;
  • It confirms the ability of Romanian carriers to operate at high standards—even in regions with special security and airspace coordination challenges;
  • It sends a clear message of courage, discipline, and professionalism from Romania’s aviation industry

DAN AIR will operate four weekly flights on the Bucharest–Damascus route, with extensions to Berlin starting in July.

The Romanian Airline Companies Association “Carpathia” supports and congratulates this initiative, which combines commercial bravery, operational excellence, and diplomatic responsibility. This is an important step in rebuilding Romania’s position in both regional and international aviation.
