The National Company TAROM is recalibrating its commercial strategy by extending its "Light" fare types (which do not include checked baggage) to domestic flights. The measure, effective for tickets issued starting February 12, 2026, marks a decisive stage in the national carrier's restructuring and efficiency process.

Until now, the option to travel without checked baggage was exclusively available on the company’s international routes. Through this standardization, TAROM aims to increase competitiveness in a domestic market characterized by accelerated dynamics.

Flexibility for Passengers and Operational Optimization

The new fare structure is designed to meet the diversified needs of passengers, offering more attractive prices for those traveling short distances for business or city breaks without the need for checked luggage.

Central elements of the new commercial offer:

  • "Light" Structure: Includes one carry-on bag of maximum 8 kg and one personal item.

  • Availability: The fare is applicable to all domestic routes operated by TAROM, ensuring better demand segmentation.

  • Maintained Services: Regardless of the chosen fare class, passengers continue to benefit from free check-in services (online or at the airport) and onboard assistance.

This change allows the operator to better manage aircraft weight (payload) and, consequently, optimize fuel consumption—an essential aspect in the context of sustainability goals and CO2 emission reduction.

Strategic Context: Alignment with the Hybrid Model

Implementing "Light" fares on domestic flights aligns TAROM with the global trends of legacy (full-service) operators that have adopted hybrid business models to compete effectively with other carriers. This strategy allows the company to display lower starting prices in reservation systems while maintaining the quality standards associated with the national brand.

From the perspective of the RACA, the adaptability of member companies to market realities is a key factor for the stability of the Romanian aviation sector. TAROM's ability to modernize its commercial policies without compromising safety or service quality is a positive signal for both industrial partners and the traveling public.

Perspectives for the 2026 Season

The expansion of these fares comes at a time of traffic growth at regional airports, offering passengers from the provinces an additional connectivity option to the Bucharest hub at lower costs. This measure is anticipated to stimulate aircraft load factors on domestic routes during the summer season of 2026.
