The completion of the first stage of modernization works at Bucharest–Otopeni “Henri Coandă” International Airport marks an important milestone for Romania’s air transport infrastructure and for the millions of passengers who use this airport every year. The projects carried out by the Bucharest Airports National Company (BANC) between 2023 and 2025, and recently commissioned, represent one of the most extensive infrastructure interventions in recent years, with direct benefits for air operators and for the operational performance of the entire airport.
Among the key results is the expansion of Apron No. 2 to 190,000 m², which now includes 28 additional parking positions for Code C aircraft and stands adapted for large Code E aircraft. This increase in parking capacity reduces apron congestion, improves turnaround times and allows airlines to operate under more stable and efficient conditions.

The modernization of the five taxiways serving Runway 2 (08L–26R), the construction of a new taxiway, and the development of two rapid-access service roads for handling equipment further contribute to reducing taxi times and streamlining aircraft movements on the airside. Taken together, these works—complemented by upgrades to the lighting, LED illumination and drainage systems—raise safety and energy efficiency levels, bringing the airport in line with the requirements of EU Regulation No. 139/2014.
In addition to the infrastructure already completed, BANC has launched a public consultation for the development of a new underground road passage that will provide a second optimized exit from the airport towards Bucharest. The passage is designed to pass beneath the railway bridge on DN1 and to take over the traffic flows in the Arrivals Terminal area, significantly reducing current congestion and offering passengers and airline personnel faster and more predictable road access.

At the same time, the airport has initiated procedures for Stage II of the modernization program, launching the public tender for the modernization of Runway No. 1, a major investment project. Upgrading this runway is essential for increasing operational capacity, minimizing the impact of future works on air traffic, and ensuring operational continuity in a context of rapidly growing demand.
These investments, both completed and in preparation, shape the strategic direction required for the modernization of Romania’s air transport sector. For airlines, they provide a more efficient and predictable operating environment, while for passengers they deliver improved services, faster access and a travel experience aligned with European standards. The Romanian Airline Companies Association “Carpathia” will continue to support and promote all initiatives that contribute to the development of aviation infrastructure and to the competitiveness of Romanian air carriers.
