A crowd of politicians gathered at Romania's second busiest airport, based on 2023 traffic data, for the inauguration of the new departures terminal—a modernization and expansion project that marked an important milestone for Romania's aviation infrastructure. With an investment of approximately 73 million euros, supported by European funds and the state budget, the terminal expansion brings multiple benefits for both passengers and airlines.
The expansion and modernization of the terminal
The new departures terminal has been expanded by approximately 7,200 square meters and includes modern facilities for managing passenger flows to and from the Schengen and Non-Schengen areas. It is equipped with state-of-the-art security control equipment, including CT scanners that allow passengers to pass through security without removing liquids and electronics from their luggage.
The departures terminal has been expanded on both the ground floor and the upper level, in the area of gates A1, A2, and A3 designated for domestic flights, as well as gates B1, B2, B3, and B4 for international flights. Approximately 7,200 square meters have been added to the terminal, along with nearly 9,000 square meters to the aircraft parking apron, increasing processing capacity and passenger comfort. The new spaces are equipped with state-of-the-art C3 standard security equipment and include two boarding gates for international flights and one for domestic flights. The terminal expansion allows for the proper execution of passenger and baggage processing activities, including registration, check-in formalities, security control, border document checks, and customs control. The processing capacity has been scaled to efficiently manage passenger and baggage flows during peak hours, addressing future needs according to traffic forecasts.
Economic and Infrastructural Impact
The Prime Minister of Romania emphasized that the terminal expansion is a driver of economic growth for the Cluj region, attracting tourists and business travelers, as well as new airlines that will add destinations and direct flights. This development strengthens Cluj County's position as a regional transportation hub and opens up new economic opportunities.
Modern Technologies and Sustainability
The airport modernization also includes the installation of a photovoltaic panel system on the terminal's roof, designed to supply a portion of the airport's energy consumption. Other technological innovations include facial recognition systems based on Artificial Intelligence algorithms, which enhance security by quickly identifying wanted individuals and provide the necessary decision-making support in operational situations.
Collaboration and Future
The inauguration event brought together high-ranking officials who highlighted the importance of collaboration between local and central authorities in achieving this project. In the coming years, the airport aims to reach an annual traffic of 7 million passengers, becoming a central hub in Romania's air transport network.
What's next?
The expansion and modernization of "Avram Iancu" Cluj-Napoca International Airport represent a significant step in the development of Romania's aviation infrastructure, with a substantial impact on the regional economy and the passenger experience. With new facilities and state-of-the-art technologies, the airport is well-equipped to handle an increased passenger flow and to contribute to enhanced connectivity and aviation safety in the region.
