Carpatair, one of Romania’s longest-established and most experienced airlines, has become a member of the Romanian Airline Companies Association “Carpathia” - RACA. Its membership strengthens the Association’s representativeness and brings the experience of a Romanian operator with more than 25 years of activity in European aviation.
Founded in 1999 and operating under Air Operator Certificate RO-003, Carpatair is, after TAROM, the second-longest-established Romanian commercial passenger airline still in operation.
Headquartered in Timișoara, the company has undergone several stages of development and adaptation throughout its existence, in response to changes in the European aviation market. Its first scheduled flights were launched in 1999, and Carpatair subsequently developed an extensive regional connectivity system, at one point operating a network centred around Timișoara Airport.
From Scheduled Services to an Airline Specialised in ACMI and Wet-Lease Operations
After operating numerous domestic and international scheduled routes, Carpatair began changing its business model in 2014. The company shifted its focus towards non-scheduled operations and the provision of ACMI, wet-lease and charter services, becoming a provider of operational capacity to other airlines.
Under an ACMI agreement, the operator provides the aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance, offering the customer airline a complete solution for supplementing or maintaining its operational capacity. This type of cooperation is essential in an industry characterised by seasonality, fluctuating capacity requirements and the temporary unavailability of aircraft.
In recent years, Carpatair’s aircraft and crews have operated on behalf of well-known European airlines, including airBaltic. The Romanian operator currently conducts operations for Volotea, while continuing to provide capacity to Romanian airlines whenever required.

A Three-Aircraft Airbus Fleet
Carpatair’s operational fleet consists of three aircraft from the Airbus A320 family:
- Airbus A319 YR-ABA;
- Airbus A319 YR-ABB;
- Airbus A320 YR-ABC.
All three aircraft are listed in the records of the Romanian Civil Aeronautical Authority for commercial air transport operations conducted by Carpatair.
The fleet’s recent activity highlights the European dimension of the company’s operations. In recent days, Carpatair aircraft have operated through airports including Nantes, Nice, Venice, Athens, Vilnius, Faro, Corfu and Verona, as well as numerous other regional and leisure airports across Europe.

An Important Membership for the Representation of Romanian Aviation
With Carpatair joining RACA, the Association further strengthens its ability to represent the diversity of business models within Romanian aviation, including scheduled transport, charter services, ACMI, wet-lease operations and international services conducted on behalf of other airlines.
Carpatair’s experience accumulated over more than two and a half decades of activity, together with the company’s ability to adapt to major market changes, will bring significant value to the common projects and positions promoted by the Association.
“Welcoming Carpatair into ACAR is both a great pleasure and an honour for us. We are talking about the second-longest-established Romanian commercial passenger airline still in operation, an operator that has navigated several stages in the evolution of European aviation and continues to carry passengers on behalf of major airlines. Carpatair’s experience will strengthen the Association’s representativeness and bring a valuable perspective to our common projects,” said Marius Popescu, President of the Romanian Airline Companies Association “Carpathia”..
RACA promotes a competitive, connected and sustainable air transport sector in Romania, for the benefit of passengers and the national economy. Through the active participation of its members, the Association seeks to strengthen dialogue among airlines, public authorities, airports and European institutions.
We warmly welcome our colleagues from Carpatair and are confident that, together, we will contribute to strengthening and developing Romanian aviation.
