Its membership strengthens the Association’s representativeness and brings the experience of a Romanian operator with more than 25 years of activity in European aviation.

Founded in 1999 and operating under Air Operator Certificate RO-003, Carpatair is, after TAROM, the second-longest-established Romanian commercial passenger airline still in operation.

Headquartered in Timișoara, the company has undergone several stages of development and adaptation throughout its existence, in response to changes in the European aviation market. Its first scheduled flights were launched in 1999, and Carpatair subsequently developed an extensive regional connectivity system, at one point operating a network centred around Timișoara Airport.

From Scheduled Services to an Airline Specialised in ACMI and Wet-Lease Operations

After operating numerous domestic and international scheduled routes, Carpatair began changing its business model in 2014. The company shifted its focus towards non-scheduled operations and the provision of ACMI, wet-lease and charter services, becoming a provider of operational capacity to other airlines.

Under an ACMI agreement, the operator provides the aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance, offering the customer airline a complete solution for supplementing or maintaining its operational capacity. This type of cooperation is essential in an industry characterised by seasonality, fluctuating capacity requirements and the temporary unavailability of aircraft.

In recent years, Carpatair’s aircraft and crews have operated on behalf of well-known European airlines, including airBaltic. The Romanian operator currently conducts operations for Volotea, while continuing to provide capacity to Romanian airlines whenever required.

A Three-Aircraft Airbus Fleet

Carpatair’s operational fleet consists of three aircraft from the Airbus A320 family:

Airbus A319 YR-ABA;

Airbus A319 YR-ABB;

Airbus A320 YR-ABC.

All three aircraft are listed in the records of the Romanian Civil Aeronautical Authority for commercial air transport operations conducted by Carpatair.

The fleet’s recent activity highlights the European dimension of the company’s operations.
